Unit Planning Resources
To help support districts with implementation of the Common Core Learning Standards (CCLS) in all areas, the IES team has developed a variety of resources and support to assist districts.
NYSED Curriculum Modules
NYSED has contracted with vendors to develop Curriculum Modules for Grades PK-12 ELA and Math. The IES team will provide support to districts as they decide whether to adopt the modules. Additional information on the Curriculum Modules can be found here.
NYSED Curriculum Exemplars
NYSED has provided exemplars on the EngageNY site for teachers to work with. These are exemplary practices that can fit within a school’s larger curriculum and program and should be a starting point when designing units (for example - they do not include formative assessments).
District Developed Assessments
A unit should define a coherent portion of a curriculum and should incorporate not only activities but well-considered learning goals that define what a student should know, understand, and be able to do in order to achieve the standards that the unit is designed to teach. In addition, the assessments to be used both during and at the the end of the instructional unit should be defined prior to instruction and must measure the student learning goals. The Understanding by Design framework does all of this and the Integrated Education Services team uses that as our gold standard.
Recognizing that backwards design is not the traditional model of unit development, the IES team has designed three days of professional learning to support unit design which also includes revisiting and deepening knowledge of both the Common Core Learning Standards and assessment literacy. The learning objectives for these days are in the document below. These days can and should be adapted for individual districts to meet their specific needs and build upon the work that has already been done.

All units that are developed are housed in the IES Moodle and are accessible to all teachers who created units. Teachers are encouraged to review the units developed by their colleagues, implement units and provide feedback and/or additional resources through the Moodle forums. Our intent is to create a collaborative learning space for the regional teachers of E2CCB.
